John Wayne Gacy (Michael Chernus) ermordete zwischen 1972 und 1978 mindestens 33 Männer und Jungen im Umkreis von Chicago. Lange Zeit kamen ihm die Behörden nicht auf die Spur, vielleicht auch, weil er einen durchschnittlichen Job hatte, als charmant und humorvoll beschrieben wurde und sogar als Clown verkleidet seinen Freiwilligendienst im Krankenhaus absolvierte, um kranke Kinder aufzuheitern. Allerdings spielten auch gesellschaftlich etablierte Vorurteile und Behördenversagen eine große Rolle. Neben den Taten an sich will das Format auch die Schickale der vorwiegend schwulen Opfer aufarbeiten sowie die Traumata, welche die Morde bei den Hinterbliebenen auslösten.
