개요
영국 본머스 해변, 쿠퍼 양의 암울하고 작은 호텔에는 외롭지만 괴짜 같은 인물들이 숙박하고 있다. 시빌 레일튼 벨 수줍은 성격이고 엄마에게 꼼작 못한다. 유쾌한 폴락 소령은 외로움으로 사람들의 관심을 끌기 위해 자신의 과거를 부풀리곤 한다. 주정꾼 존 맬콤은 세상에 실망했으나 쿠퍼 양과 사랑에 빠져있다. 그러나 쿠퍼 양은 맬콤의 전 부인이 언제 나타날지 모른다는 걱정으로 결혼을 승낙하지 않고 있다. 두 가지 사건이 일어나 평온한 호텔을 뒤집어 놓는다. 폴락 소령이 극장에서 여성을 추행했다는 기사가 지방 신문에 난다. 시빌의 엄마는 이 사건을 빌미로 폴락 소령을 호텔에서 몰아내려 한다. 거기에 맬콤의 전처가 나타나 그녀는 맬콤 없이는 살 수 없다고 달려든다. 둘은 노력해 보기로 결정한다. 시빌은 더 이상 엄마의 말을 듣지 않게 되고 호텔의 다른 손님들도 시빌의 엄마인 레일튼 부인에게 그들은 폴락 소령을 원한다고 말한다.
