James Balog, fotograaf voor National Geographic, heeft een missie; hij wil de krimpende ijskappen in beeld brengen. Samen met enkele avonturiers tast hij de grenzen af van de technologische (en menselijke) mogelijkheden. Hij brengt de diepgevroren wereld op een sprookjesachtige manier in beeld; met behulp van time-lapse technologie worden jaren weergegeven in seconden, we zien eeuwenoude ijslandschappen voor onze ogen veranderen. Chasing Ice brengt de klimaatverandering op verbluffende manier in beeld en vertelt tegelijk het verhaal van een man met onstuitbare passie en drive.
